Hyde Park Blast Partners with PuR, Duke Energy and Turner Construction in 2009 for Green Initiatives

Hyde Park Blast is the region’s “greenest” race

The 8th Annual Hyde Park Blast will be held this year on June 27, 2009 with a full day of fun and exercise opportunities for adults, kids and cycling enthusiasts followed by the Blast Block Party with The Rusty Griswolds, one of Cincinnati’s most popular bands.

Continuing the Blast’s past eco-friendly efforts, the event is taking it to the next level and adding the following green initiatives to make it the region’s most environmentally friendly race day:

-       Pace Car: The Duke Energy Hybrid will be the lead pace car for the 4-mile RRCA and USATF Championship run, walk and cycling races.

-       Green Race Bibs/Numbers: Hyde Park Blast race participants will receive “plant-able” race numbers that can be planted to grow wild flowers after the event provided by Duke.

-       Eliminating Bottled Water: In conjunction with the PuR Water Filtration brand and the Boy Scouts, PuR will provide a biodegradable, filled and chilled, reusable water bottle to all participants at the finish. Participants will be able to refill them at the PuR water filtration filling stations.

-       Virtual Race Results:  The End Result in partnership with Buzz 360, will provide participants with live results, race updates and promotions sent to their cell phone or email, eliminating printed coupons and results certificates.

-       Eco-Friendly Coloring Book:  Release of a children’s coloring book in partnership with Hamilton County Solid Waste and Cincinnati Parks Board to encourage green thinking and getting active.

In addition to the new elements for this year, the event wide recycling initiative will be supported by the Boy Scouts and employees from a new sponsor, Turner Construction.  bigg’s a returning partner, will also be very active again, supplying reusable/recycled “race bags” to all participants as well as organic food offerings for both the run and Block Party.

“The Blast organizers are committed to making the day-long event as green as possible,” said Chad Sims, Blast co-founder. “We are excited about new partnerships with the PuR brand, Duke Energy, and Turner Construction – all local companies – to make this the region’s ‘greenest’ race.  In addition, support from the Boy Scouts and returning partner bigg’s will truly bring our eco-friendly efforts to a new level. ”

Anyone interested in running or walking training for the four-mile race should contact Joe Brinkman at The Running Spot in O’Bryonville for training group information (321-3006).
